This collection brings together reproductions of works by Paul Signac (1863–1935), a painter, watercolourist and theorist of Neo-Impressionism. Ports, sailing boats, rivers, cities and Mediterranean landscapes reveal the evolution of his colour, from his early Divisionist experiments to his travel watercolours and the broader brushstrokes of his mature period.

From Impressionism to Neo-Impressionism

Signac trained by studying the works of Manet, Monet, Guillaumin and the Impressionists rather than following a conventional academic education. In 1884, he met Georges Seurat and helped found the Société des artistes indépendants. Their research was based on juxtaposing distinct tones and on theories of colour contrast.

Gasometers at Clichy belongs to the period when Signac adopted the Divisionist method. The Dining Room applies this colourful construction to an interior scene, a less common subject than the ports with which his name is often associated.

Divisionism and Pointillism: what is the difference?

The word “Pointillism” primarily describes the visible appearance of small brushstrokes or dots. Divisionism refers more specifically to the principle of separating tones on the canvas so that their relationship produces optical mixing and greater brilliance. In Signac’s work, the brushstroke is not always a regular dot: over time, it becomes broader and more free-flowing.

Colour therefore structures volumes, reflections and atmosphere. A reproduction can be viewed up close to follow the brushstrokes, then from a distance to perceive their visual fusion.

Saint-Tropez: Light and Harmony

Signac settled in Saint-Tropez in the early 1890s. The port, tartanes, hills and Mediterranean light became central subjects. The Port at Sunset, Opus 236 combines the rhythm of masts, reflections and the progression of the sky. Cassis, Cap Lombard, Opus 196, meanwhile, constructs the landscape through planes of colour.

In the Time of Harmony extends this exploration to a composition of figures. The work brings together a Mediterranean landscape, communal life and a social ideal, reminding us that Signac was also an engaged artist and author.

Brittany, Normandy and Atlantic Ports

A passionate sailor, Signac travelled along the coasts and produced numerous views of ports. Concarneau in the Calm of Morning, The Port of La Rochelle and Saint-Malo, the Newfoundland Fishermen offer different rhythms of hulls, quays and rigging.

Mont-Saint-Michel, Sunset brings together a monumental silhouette and the changing light. These works can form a coherent series centred on French ports, Brittany or variations in the sky.

Paris, Rivers and Port Cities

Paris’s bridges offered Signac another way to organise water and architecture. Paris, the Pont-Neuf brings the river, quays and urban movement into relation. Elsewhere in Europe, The Port of Rotterdam focuses on maritime activity and industrial forms.

In Venice, water, façades and sky become fields of colour. Venice, the Pink Cloud plays on the relationships between warm and cool tones. The city offered Signac an ideal motif for combining architecture and reflections without abandoning the structure of the drawing.

Watercolour, travel and studio work

Over time, Signac devoted much of his work to watercolour, a medium suited to his travels. He recorded notes on colour and light on site, then developed certain compositions in the studio. This method explains the coexistence of quick, transparent images and more structured paintings.

The Buoy aptly sums up his interest in maritime signs, blocks of colour and the movement of water. A simple subject becomes a study in rhythm and contrast.

Theorist and champion of colour

After Seurat’s death in 1891, Signac continued to champion Neo-Impressionism. His essay From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism, published in 1899, set out his ideas on colour and helped disseminate them. President of the Société des artistes indépendants for much of the 1909–1935 period, he also supported new generations of artists.

His broader brushstrokes and use of pure colour particularly interested painters associated with Fauvism. The collection therefore traces both a personal visual language and an important transition between Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism and the colour experiments of the early 20th century.
