Water Spaniel Confronting a Heron – Jean-Baptiste Oudry

At the water’s edge, a white-and-brown spaniel advances towards a heron spreading its wings and opening its beak. The two animals fill the foreground among tall reeds and broad leaves. The very low viewpoint brings the viewer down to their level.

Jean-Baptiste Oudry painted this animal scene in 1722. Executed in oil on canvas, it measures 138.43 × 105.41 cm. The dog has a clipped tail, but no collar or human figure appears in the composition.

The work is displayed at the Dallas Museum of Art on loan from the Michael L. Rosenberg Foundation. Its museum number is 32.2019.9.
