Voyage of La Coquille: Forest Bittern, Plate 44 – Prêtre and Coutant
The plate shows a long-legged bird in profile, with strongly barred brown plumage, standing on a small rocky surface. An occipital feather is illustrated separately on the left. The caption locates the bird in New Guinea.
Published in 1828 in the zoological atlas of the Voyage of La Coquille, the bird is labelled “Héron phaéton” and Ardea heliosyla. It is now classified as Zonerodius heliosylus, the Forest Bittern.
Jean-Gabriel Prêtre produced the illustration and Jean-Louis-Denis Coutant engraved it for Rémond’s printing house. René Primevère Lesson and Prosper Garnot were responsible for the zoological work. Louis-Isidore Duperrey commanded the expedition and directed the publication; he was not the artist of the plate.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
