Coexistence of Neuroactive Substances in Neurons, a 1982 conference
This poster announces an international conference presented by the Fogarty International Center on 28–29 September 1982 at Stone House, Building 16 of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The meeting was organised by neuroanatomists Sanford L. Palay and Victoria Chan-Palay.
A new question for neuroscience
The conference examined research showing that a single nerve cell could contain several neuroactive substances and release more than one neurotransmitter. These observations challenged the then widely held principle that each neuron released only one transmitter at all its terminals.
A white diagram on a red ground
Four stylised neuronal forms surround a circle filled with dots, while curved arrows suggest exchanges between them. The uninterrupted red field, white lines and heavy title lettering create an immediately legible scientific poster characteristic of early-1980s institutional graphic design.
