The 1928 Mozart Cycle

Created by Henri Dormoy for the Société universelle du théâtre, this poster announces the second international festival devoted to Mozart at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris in May and June 1928. The programme included Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, The Abduction from the Seraglio and The Magic Flute.

A monumental profile

A dark profile dominates the beige ground. Brown vertical bands organise the white and green information on the left, while the word “MOZART” commands the lower section in red. Large capitals and geometric blocks give the design its Art Deco rhythm.

Music supporting a charitable cause

The poster states that the festival benefited the Nelly Martyl Foundation clinic for the detection of hereditary diseases and was held under the honorary presidency of Gaston Doumergue. The signature “Dormoy 28” appears at the upper right.
