Tokaido Gojusantsugi, Plate 21: An invitation to emotion
The scene of Tokaido Gojusantsugi, Plate 21 captures the momentum of a journey and the poetry of a suspended moment: wind-swept shoreline, sketched silhouettes, and deep perspectives that lead the eye along the road. The subtle colors, dominated by indigo and ochre tones, blend with brighter touches to emphasize movement and light. The composition combines diagonal lines and flat areas, revealing mastery of woodblock printing. This Tokaido Gojusantsugi art print faithfully reproduces the freshness of the original, inviting contemplation and evoking immediate emotion through its visual harmony and technical delicacy.
by Andō Hiroshige, master of ukiyo-e
Andō Hiroshige, a major figure of the Edo period, revolutionized Japanese landscape aesthetics by popularizing ukiyo-e: prints of everyday life, landscapes, and views of the Tōkaidō road. Influenced by Japanese tradition and attention to seasonal changes, he produced iconic series that inspired Western artists and collectors. The 'Tokaido Gojusantsugi' series is a narrative masterpiece, where each plate tells a unique step. This Hiroshige art print, here honored with a faithful reproduction, testifies to his sense of framing, graphic rhythm, and visual poetry that have earned him international renown.
