Andō Hiroshige, master of ukiyo-e
Andō Hiroshige, a central figure of the ukiyo-e school in the 19th century, elevated landscape to the pinnacle of Japanese printmaking. Influenced by Japanese tradition and a deep sensitivity to nature, he renewed the depiction of travel and daily life by multiplying viewpoints and unexpected framing. His most famous series, including the Tokaido, became models of balance between simplicity and visual emotion. Andō Hiroshige's art is characterized by economy of means and great lyrical strength: here, the sequence of scenes forms a graphic narrative where each vignette functions as a stanza, offering a contemplative experience close to visual poetry.
