A gouache by Niclas Lafrensen the Younger

The Enema is a gouache on paper held by Nationalmuseum in Stockholm as NMB 2591. The museum gives no date for this sheet measuring 23.5 × 18.5 cm. Its maker, Niclas Lafrensen the Younger (1737–1807), was a Swedish painter of genre scenes and miniatures who also worked in Paris under the name Nicolas Lavreince.

An explicit boudoir scene

Beneath the curtains of a canopy bed, a partly undressed woman bends over an armchair. At right, a second woman in a blue dress kneels while holding the enema syringe. A white cloth crosses the composition; two chairs, a slipper and crumpled textiles define the bedroom setting.

Intimate theatre and precise detail

The vertical composition groups the figures at the centre of a brown and ochre interior. The blue dress and white linen draw the eye, while fine contours, gouache highlights and carefully observed accessories give the scene the precision of a small cabinet picture. Its lightly comic and provocative subject belongs to the boudoir imagery associated with Lafrensen’s Paris years.
