The Transformation of Callisto – Edward Robert Hughes

In a sunlit clearing, a young woman in classical dress stands beside a tree while a greyhound draws away from her. The fraying garment and the tension between the two figures give the scene an uncanny narrative quality.

The Victorian Web, citing the Sotheby’s catalogue, records the work as The Transformation of Callisto. It is watercolour with tempera on board, measures about 52 × 38 cm and is held in a private collection.

The work was formerly presented as Lady Walking Her Dog. Its current identification with Callisto is based on the garment appearing to turn into fur and on the dog’s reaction. The work is often dated to around 1900, although its precise date remains debated.
