About Poplar leaf beetles on willow
This plate 27 by Maria Sibylla Merian comes from the first volume of Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumen-Nahrung, published in 1679. It pairs the poplar leaf beetle (Chrysomela populi) with its food plant, the goat willow (Salix caprea).
Stages of development gathered on one branch
Merian places clusters of eggs, tiny dark larvae, a larger larva, a pupa and adult beetles across the leaves, with one insect flying above the stem. The damaged foliage also records the feeding traces observed by the naturalist.
An image between art and natural history
The copper engraving arranges the plant vertically and distributes the insects around its serrated leaves. In a single composition, it makes both the insect’s life cycle and its relationship with the host plant easy to read.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
