Madonna, Infant Saint John and Angel art print — workshop of Pietro Perugino

The Madonna, the Infant Saint John and an Angel Worshipping the Christ Child — workshop of Pietro Perugino The Städel Museum attributes this painting to Pietro Perugino’s workshop and dates it to about 1510. Held under inventory number 1379, it measures 45.5 × 35.7 cm. The work was painted on wood and later transferred to blockboard. It entered the museum’s collection in 1904. At the centre, the kneeling Virgin clasps her hands before the Christ Child lying on a white bolster. To the left, the infant Saint John and an angel pray; to the right, the ox and ass appear beside a broad landscape. Slender figures, clear colours and blue-green hills create a calm, luminous devotional scene. According to the Städel Museum, the composition combines figures taken from several earlier works by Perugino and most closely parallels the Madonna del Sacco. Reusing workshop cartoons and drawings was common in the Renaissance. The accurate attribution is therefore “workshop of Pietro Perugino”, not a securely autograph painting by the master.
