The Release of Saint Peter – Bernardo Strozzi
In this close composition, a winged angel bends towards Saint Peter and removes the chain fastened around his wrist. The apostle’s aged, bearded face turns towards the angel while his hand drops into the foreground. Bright white garments, an ochre cloak and the dark background focus attention on the two figures and the act of release.
The Art Gallery of New South Wales dates this oil on canvas to circa 1635. The work measures 125.5 × 114 cm on its stretcher, is neither signed nor dated and has accession number OO1.1966. The museum identifies the scene as the angel delivering Peter from his bonds.
