The Flower Girl (Spring) – Bartolomé Esteban Murillo

A young woman sits on a stone ledge before an open landscape. She holds flowers in a red patterned shawl and wears a head covering that is also decorated with flowers.

Dulwich Picture Gallery dates this oil on canvas to 1665–1670, records dimensions of 120.7 × 98.3 cm and assigns it accession number DPG199.

The sitter’s identity remains uncertain. The painting has variously been interpreted as a personification of Spring, a flower seller or, more cautiously, Murillo’s daughter. X-radiography revealed an earlier Immaculate Conception composition beneath the paint.
