The Christian Martyrs’ Last Prayer, painted between 1863 and 1883 by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), shows a group of Christians kneeling in prayer at the centre of an arena. Lions emerge from a trapdoor while condemned figures tied to posts line the track before a vast crowd.

William T. Walters commissioned the work in 1863, and Gérôme delivered it twenty years later in 1883. The artist identified the setting as the Circus Maximus, but the Walters Art Museum notes that its architecture combines several Roman references: dramatic effect takes precedence over exact historical reconstruction.
