The Bathers – Roger de La Fresnaye

A standing man in red shorts dominates a group of seated figures built from angular planes and broad blocks of colour. Their bodies interlock before a blue sky, stylised clouds, a tree and a few architectural forms.

Artwork details

Roger de La Fresnaye painted this oil on canvas in 1912. The original measures 162 × 130 cm and is signed “R de La Fresnaye” at lower right. Exhibited at the 1912 Salon d’Automne as number 613, it is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
