About the portrait
The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds this portrait under the historical title Tchong-tas-sáb-bee, Black Dog, Second Chief. George Catlin painted it in 1834 in oil on canvas. It measures 29 × 24 in. (73.7 × 60.9 cm) and is object 1985.66.31.
Black Dog, an Osage leader
The museum identifies the sitter as Black Dog and the subject as Osage. Catlin wrote that he led one of three Osage bands. The Osage Nation Museum still discusses Black Dog I and Black Dog II as influential leaders whose descendants carry their history.
A full-length portrait in context
Black Dog stands wrapped in a pale blanket edged in black, holding a pipe in one hand and a tomahawk in the other. The historical title and account come from Catlin, an artist from outside the Osage Nation: they document his nineteenth-century viewpoint but do not replace Osage knowledge and histories.
