About the study of George Seymour Conway as a boy
Made before 1770 by Joshua Reynolds, this preparatory study portrays George Seymour Conway (1763–1848) as a child. Painted in oil on paper laid on board, it measures 40.5 × 31 cm and was made for the finished portrait painted in 1770.
A face isolated by close framing
Reynolds concentrates on the boy’s rosy-cheeked face, framed by long brown curls. His calm gaze turns slightly to one side. The background, hair and collar are handled more freely, preserving the immediacy of a working study.
From preparatory study to formal portrait
Soft modelling and warm colours bring the child’s features forward from the brown atmosphere. The sheet reveals how Reynolds established a likeness before developing the pose and costume of the finished portrait, which was subsequently circulated through a mezzotint published in 1771.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
