About Plate 53
This illustration by Mark Catesby is plate 53 from volume II of The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. The naturalist brings a zoological and a botanical study together in one etched and hand-coloured composition.
A common garter snake and hammock viper’s-tail
The snake, called Anguis viridis maculatus by Catesby, is now identified as a common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis). It coils around the stems of hammock viper’s-tail (Pentalinon luteum), a plant labelled in the original plate as Apocynum scandens.
Natural history and composition
The snake’s long curve crosses the plate diagonally, while narrow leaves, yellow flowers and two elongated fruits organise the surrounding space. Catesby combines close observation with decorative balance in a design characteristic of his illustrated survey of North American fauna and flora.
