About Scarlet
Scarlet is one of Mary Gartside’s colour compositions published in An Essay on Light and Shade, on Colours, and on Composition in General in London in 1805. Painted in watercolour, the study puts into practice the colour theory she developed for teaching painting.
A composition built around scarlet
A luminous scarlet mass fills the centre, surrounded by washes of green, yellow, pink, blue and violet. Gartside’s text advises contrasting bright scarlet with very deep green, then connecting those extremes through red, orange and touches of blue, yellow and violet. Soft edges let the colours merge without linear drawing.
Colour as the subject
Gartside conceived her “blots” as groups of colour that could guide compositions of flowers, landscapes or figures. Here the painted blot does not depict one specific object: it makes the relationships of contrast, balance and harmony described in her essay visible.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
