About Titoki
Sarah Featon painted Titoki circa 1885 in New Zealand. This botanical watercolour on paper depicts Alectryon excelsus, a tree native to New Zealand in the soapberry family. The original work, held by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, measures 21.5 × 26.5 cm within the sight line.
A precise botanical study
The branch spreads its green leaflets around clusters of red capsules opening to reveal black seeds. Featon isolates the specimen against a pale ground, combining structure, colour and botanical detail in a composition that is both informative and decorative. The handwritten title Titoki preserves the plant’s Māori name.
The Art Album of New Zealand Flora
Sarah and Edward Featon published The Art Album of New Zealand Flora in 1889, the first fully coloured art book produced in New Zealand. Forty of Sarah’s watercolours were turned into chromolithographic plates to accompany Edward’s botanical text. Titoki belongs to this important record of Aotearoa’s indigenous flora.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
