About the artwork

Jacques-Louis David devised The First Consul Crossing the Alps at the Great St Bernard Pass after French troops crossed the mountains in May 1800. Commissioned by King Charles IV of Spain, the first composition was followed by several replicas requested by Bonaparte, with variations in the colour of the cloak, the horse and its harness.

David did not set out to record the crossing literally. Bonaparte, who actually travelled over the pass on a mule, wanted to be shown “calm on a spirited horse”. The rearing horse, windblown cloak and gesture towards the summit transform the episode into a political portrait.

The rider’s diagonal figure dominates a mountain landscape, while the army and artillery advance in the background. The contrast between the First Consul’s composure and the horse’s movement gives the image its energy and lasting fame.
