About the artwork
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres painted Napoleon I on His Imperial Throne in 1806. This oil on canvas, measuring 2.60 × 1.63 m, is held by the Musée de l’Armée at the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris.
Napoleon is shown frontally, seated on a high throne and wearing his coronation robes. The purple velvet mantle scattered with golden bees, ermine and laurel wreath surround the regalia of power: the sceptre topped by a figure of Charlemagne, the Hand of Justice and a sword inspired by Joyeuse.
The hieratic frontal pose, circular backrest and wealth of symbols recall Byzantine icons, medieval illuminations and the figure of Jupiter. Criticised as “Gothic” and “barbaric” by some contemporaries when shown in 1806, the work has become one of the best-known portraits of Napoleon.
