About The Penitent Saint Jerome

The Penitent Saint Jerome, also catalogued as Saint Jerome Reading, is an oil on canvas painted by Lionello, or Leonello, Spada in the 1610s. The work measures 132 × 106 cm and belongs to the National Museum in Warsaw, where it is recorded as M.Ob.2366 (12861).

The saint, the book and the skull

Spada portrays an elderly, bare-chested saint with a white beard and red drapery. Bent over a large open book, Jerome supports his head with his left hand. A skull and a quill appear in the foreground: the former evokes mortality, while the book and quill refer to study and writing.

Dramatic light

The almost black background isolates the figure and the objects. Light crosses the face, shoulder, arm and pages before meeting the deep red drapery. This tightly focused arrangement gives the act of reading a quiet intensity. The title, artist, date, medium, dimensions and accession number are documented in the work’s museum record.
