Madame X: the oil portrait of Virginie Gautreau
John Singer Sargent painted Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau) in 1883–1884. This large full-length portrait depicts Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau in a black dress, standing against a brown background and leaning on a small table. The contrast between the dress, pale complexion and background immediately draws attention to the model’s silhouette and profile.
Shown at the Paris Salon of 1884, the work prompted many reactions. Sargent later changed the position of one dress strap and kept the painting for several decades. The original now belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
A vertical composition with strong contrasts
The upright format is particularly suited to a narrow wall, a library, an office or an arrangement centred on a portrait. The blacks and browns create a striking focal point in a room with light-coloured walls.

Provide a complete postal address and a reachable phone number. Delivery to a PO box or pickup point depends on the country, size and carrier.
Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
