A Montreal portrait from about 1790
Madame Gabriel Cotte, born Angélique Blondeau, is shown in an oil on canvas painted around 1790 and attributed to Louis-Chrétien de Heer. Held by the Detroit Institute of Arts as 59.116, the portrait measures 63.8 × 50.2 cm and was acquired by the museum in 1959.
Cap, lace and blue ribbon
The sitter appears at bust length, turned slightly three-quarter view and looking towards the viewer. A tall white cap, wrapped with a turquoise-blue ribbon and edged with lace, frames her face. A broad white fichu covers her shoulders and chest, leaving a dark-blue sleeve visible against the almost plain brown background.
A cautious attribution
Born in Bouxwiller in 1760, de Heer reached North America in 1776 and later worked as a painter and gilder in Montreal and Quebec City. The Dictionary of Canadian Biography notes that many portraits are attributed to him without documentary confirmation. The attribution is therefore stated explicitly rather than treated as certain.

Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
