Truth Coming Out of Her Well, painted in 1896 by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), personifies Truth as a nude woman emerging from a well with a whip in her hand. The figure advances directly towards the viewer, while the stone rim and dark background focus attention on her movement and expression.
This oil on canvas belongs to the Musée Anne-de-Beaujeu in Moulins, where it is one of the emblematic works in the nineteenth-century collection. Here Gérôme presents an allegory rather than a historical reconstruction: the title, frontal composition and whip turn the scene into an apparition that confronts its audience.
