Jessica, from theatre to portrait
Painted in 1867 by Thomas Francis Dicksee, Jessica depicts the heroine from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. The young woman stands out against a green background, wearing dark red fabric and jewellery. Her hand and sideways gaze give the portrait an attentive presence that goes beyond a study of costume alone.
Thomas Francis Dicksee and literary characters
British Victorian painter Thomas Francis Dicksee produced portraits and historical genre scenes. Shakespeare’s heroines occupy an important place in his work. In these portraits, costumes, accessories and facial expression contribute to our reading of the character and its narrative dimension.
Choosing a reproduction for your interior
A Jessica reproduction can bring a colourful accent to a living room, library or study. The contrast between the reds of the clothing and the green background can complement dark woods, natural materials or an interior in understated tones.
