The Magpie, painted by Claude Monet (1840–1926) at Étretat during the winter of 1868–1869, depicts an almost deserted stretch of snow-covered countryside. A magpie perches on a gate like a note on a musical staff, while sunlight and shadow structure the pale, luminous landscape.
The Musée d’Orsay explains that Monet sought to capture a sensation and a fleeting effect rather than simply describe the scene. This snowscape anticipates Impressionism five years before the movement’s first exhibition. Its innovative light palette led the 1869 Salon jury to reject it.
