Portrait of Maximilian Freiherr von Hammer-Purgstall – Leopold Fertbauer
Seated outdoors, a young boy wears a deep-blue suit with a broad white collar. A butterfly net rests beside him, while several butterflies enliven the mountainous landscape, trees and pale sky in the background.
The painting is signed and dated “Fertbauer 1834”. The sitter is identified as Maximilian Freiherr von Hammer-Purgstall according to an inscription on the reverse, so the historical identification is retained with the qualification given in the artwork record.
