Anne-Jeanne Cassanéa de Mondonville sits beside a harpsichord with her head resting on her right hand. Her pale blue dress with dark fur trim, white lace and the score before her refer directly to her work as a musician.

Artwork details

Maurice Quentin de La Tour made this pastel portrait around 1752. Born Anne-Jeanne Boucon (1708–1780), the sitter was a noted musician and in 1747 married the violinist and composer Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville. The work measures 66 × 55 cm and belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago.
