About the Portrait of Ján Droppa
Peter Michal Bohúň painted the Portrait of Ján Droppa between 1848 and 1852. This 60.3 × 47.1 cm oil on canvas, inventory number O 1603, is held by the Slovak National Gallery. The institution’s record states that the work is unsigned.
A half-length portrait against a restrained background
Ján Droppa is shown in three-quarter view, his face turned towards the viewer. His dark hair, black coat and broad white collar stand out against a plain grey background. The close framing and absence of accessories focus attention on the sitter’s gaze, facial features and dress.
Peter Michal Bohúň and Slovak portraiture
Bohúň was a nineteenth-century Slovak painter whose work includes many portraits. Here, the softly modelled face contrasts with the broad dark shapes of the clothing. The restrained vertical composition gives the sitter a direct presence suited to both classic décor and contemporary interiors.
