George Townshend is shown half-length in armour before a dark curtain. A broad red sash crosses the breastplate, while the helmet at left and the rolled document held by the sitter evoke his military and public career.

Sir Joshua Reynolds painted this oil on canvas around 1767. The original measures 91.8 × 71.6 cm. Christie’s catalogue identifies this version as the autograph prime of the composition, of which two replicas are known. Townshend was then the 4th Viscount Townshend; he was created 1st Marquess Townshend in 1786.
