Handstand by Yo Sugano

Handstand is an etching on paper by Japanese printmaker Yo Sugano (1919–1995). The Rijksmuseum describes a clown-like figure doing a handstand, with his shadow behind him. The impression is signed “Y. Sugano” and numbered 2/15.

A twentieth-century Japanese print

After studying Japanese painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Sugano turned to copperplate printmaking. He also researched its history and techniques. The Rijksmuseum dates this print between 1937 and 1969 and received it as a gift from the artist in 1969.
