René de Rabi, master of the naturalist gaze
René de Rabi is part of the lineage of 19th-century naturalist illustrators, driven by the demand for scientific observation and a sense of academic drawing. Influenced by the great traditions of botany and natural history collections, his work is characterized by documentary precision combined with graphic sensitivity. His plates, intended to instruct and to captivate, contributed to the dissemination of colonial and botanical knowledge of his time. Here, the art print of Saint-Domingue Natural History Pl158 not only reproduces a faithful image but also reflects the pedagogical concern that animated René de Rabi, paying homage to his role as an illustrator-historian.
