René de Rabi, master of the naturalist gaze
René de Rabi is part of the lineage of naturalist illustrators who documented the biodiversity of colonies with precision and sensitivity. Influenced by European naturalist treatises, he combines rigorous observation with finesse of line, reminiscent of anatomical plates and naturalist atlases of his time. Among his works, this plate stands out for its attention to detail and its ability to convey the insular context of Saint-Domingue. René de Rabi's art thus captures both science and aesthetics, making each art print both educational and decorative.
