About the portrait of Mrs Richard Paul Jodrell
Painted by Joshua Reynolds between 1774 and 1776, this portrait depicts Vertue Jodrell. In 1772 she had married her second cousin, the classical scholar and dramatist Richard Paul Jodrell. The oil on canvas measures 77.5 × 64.1 cm and is held by the Detroit Institute of Arts.
A richly dressed half-length figure
The sitter appears against a dark background, wearing a broad golden turban decorated with pearls. A pale, ermine-trimmed wrap surrounds her dress, while a blue sash crosses her waist. To the right, red drapery opens onto a glimpse of blue sky, creating a theatrical contrast.
Marriage portraits entrusted to two rivals
The museum records an unusual choice: the couple commissioned their marriage portraits from professional rivals. Reynolds painted Vertue Jodrell, while Thomas Gainsborough portrayed her husband; his painting is now in the Frick Collection in New York.
