About the Basilica of Constantine with the Adoration of the Magi
This 96 × 73.5 cm oil painting on canvas is attributed to Niccolò Codazzi in the catalogue entry for lot 602, sold at the Dorotheum in Vienna on 30 April 2019. Its documented provenance includes Giorgio Giorgi in Ospedaletti in 1992 and a private collection in Liguria.
A religious scene among ruins
A large brick arch occupies the centre of the composition. Broken timbers cross the opening and reveal a succession of ruined spaces. In the foreground, the Adoration of the Magi group gathers on the right, while other figures and animals animate the passage. A bright star appears in the sky at upper left.
Architecture and figures
The vertical masses of the piers and the central arch create a deep perspective towards the distant landscape. Warm light strikes the masonry and hanging boards, while the foreground remains darker. The reference cited by Dorotheum lists the work as number NC 7 and describes the figures as close to Michelangelo Cerquozzi.
