About La Toilette
La Toilette is a colour print by Louis-Marin Bonnet after a composition by Nicolas-René Jollain. The National Gallery of Art holds the sheet in the Widener Collection as accession 1942.9.2388. It measures 28.9 × 22.9 cm and is catalogued as colour stipple.
A scene of personal grooming
A nude woman wearing a flowered hat stands before another woman who helps her dress or prepare. The room contains a mirror, a chair draped with fabric, a table with flowers, a clock, candles, a small fire and an oval portrait. Here the French title refers to the ritual of dressing and grooming, never to a lavatory.
An interior built through detail
Coloured stipple distinguishes skin, textiles, red patterned wallpaper and furniture. Accessories placed throughout the room set the action in a refined interior and carry the eye around the two figures. The attribution, medium, dimensions and accession number are documented by the National Gallery of Art.
