Interior with a Man and a Woman Smoking is an oil on canvas by Norbert van Bloemen, a Flemish painter born in Antwerp in 1670 who died around 1746 in Amsterdam. The undated work was catalogued by Sotheby’s in London in 2011. It measures 38 × 33.2 cm and is signed with the initials “N.V.B.” at centre left.

A compact composition in earthy colours
The two figures fill almost the entire vertical format. Light is concentrated on their faces and hands, while brown, ochre, black and muted blue organise the scene. The spare background, foreshortened barrel and close placement of the figures give this interior an immediate, theatrical presence.
