About Looking for the Game
Painted in 1872, Looking for the Game is an oil on canvas by Hugo Kauffmann. In a snowy woodland, three armed hunters and a dog pause beside a low stone wall, watching a trail or listening for a sign.
A winter hunting scene
The leading hunter turns towards his companions while the dog remains alert at the edge of the path. Dark figures stand out against the snow; vertical trunks, the narrow passage and brown touches of foliage lead the eye deeper into the forest.
