Seated three-quarter length in an armchair, Georges Bizet holds a cigar and looks directly at the viewer. His dark suit, pale gloves and pince-nez stand out against a restrained brown background within a vertical oval format.
The Musée Carnavalet holds this portrait under the title Georges Bizet (1838–1875), compositeur. Félix Giacomotti painted it around 1865 in oil on canvas. The work measures 63 × 49 cm and has inventory number P2501.
The inscription “F. Giacomotti / à son ami Georges Bizet” reveals the portrait’s personal character. The dedication connects the painter with the composer of Carmen at the beginning of his artistic maturity.
