This striking photograph captures American units rushing from their LCVPs (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel), numbered PD29-4, PD29-3, and PD29-2, during amphibious exercises in preparation for the Provence landings. The craft belong to the fast troop transport USS Barry (APD-29), a former destroyer converted for amphibious operations at the Charleston Navy Yard in January 1944.
Shot at Mers-el-Kébir, Algeria, in May 1944, this scene illustrates the meticulous preparation of Allied forces for the major operations in the Mediterranean theater. After taking part in the Provence landings, the USS Barry would be deployed to the Pacific.
Curiously, this image was also used to promote the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings, testifying to its symbolic impact and striking visual power.
