Dying Hercules — Samuel Finley Breese Morse Painted in London in 1812–1813, this monumental oil on canvas by Samuel Finley Breese Morse measures 244.5 × 198.4 cm. Held by the Yale University Art Gallery under accession number 1866.3, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1813. Hercules appears alone, seated on a rock in a dark landscape. His nude body is strongly lit; he raises one arm towards the sky while gripping a length of drapery, and the twisting legs and torso convey strain and suffering. Morse prepared the composition with a plaster model of the hero. The contrast between the monumental body, stormy sky and rocky setting gives this history painting its theatrical intensity.
