Laminaria bulbosa by Anna Atkins
Against the cyanotype’s deep blue, the seaweed’s broad pale blades unfold in soft folds. Placed directly on sensitised paper, the specimen leaves a light silhouette with sharply defined edges. The handwritten label “Laminaria bulbosa” at the foot of the plate preserves its historical scientific name.
A plate from Photographs of British Algae
Anna Atkins made this plate as part of Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, issued in fascicles between 1843 and 1853. The cyanotype is a photogram: the seaweed was laid on light-sensitive paper and exposed to light without a camera. The method brings botanical observation and photography together in one of the earliest photographically illustrated books.

Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
