Bairei gafu, plate 11: An Invitation to Emotion
The art print Bairei gafu, plate 11 immediately captures the eye with its subtle balance between naturalistic details and economy of line. On this plate, the plant elements are arranged in a rhythmic composition where each feather and leaf seems animated by a breath. The tones, subdued and nuanced, alternate between warm ochres and patinated greens, offering a gentle depth that invites contemplation. The original technique, faithful to Japanese printmaking, reveals precise graphics and delicacy of wash: the reproduction reproduces the intensity of the line while restoring the original texture, transforming the artwork into an object of quiet emotion and visual poetry.
Kono Bairei, master of Japanese naturalism
The art of Kono Bairei is situated at the crossroads of the 19th and 20th centuries, where the tradition of nishiki-e meets a renewed sense of scientific observation. Recognized painter and engraver for his naturalist studies, Bairei influenced a generation of artists by reconciling botanical accuracy with aesthetic sensitivity. Among his most admired works are plates of birds and plants, where attention to detail rivals elegant composition. This art print pays tribute to this legacy: it allows appreciation of the master's precision in an accessible format, while restoring the discreet charm that characterizes his work.
