About the artwork

Discover the story behind this artwork

This striking photograph captures a spiritual and solemn moment during the Normandy landings. American soldiers (GIs) and sailors of the U.S. Navy, recognizable by their jackets, attend the sermon of a military chaplain aboard a troop transport. The chaplain has set up a portable altar behind him, symbolizing faith and comfort amid the fighting.

The soldiers, equipped with the M-26 USN belt and the gas mask musette, include members of the famous 101st Airborne Division ("Screaming Eagles"), recognizable by their emblematic patch: a white eagle's head on a black field. These Seaborne elements of the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment (GIR) landed at Utah Beach from 11:00 a.m. on June 6, 1944, playing a key role in the liberation of France.

This timeless image embodies the faith, courage, and brotherhood of those who participated in the pivotal events of D-Day.
