About The Artist in His Room at the Villa Medici, Rome
This work by Auguste Vinchon, dated to around 1817, is an oil on canvas measuring 43.2 × 35 cm. An inscription on the reverse identifies “M. Aug. Vinchon in his room in the Villa Medici”. The painter stayed at the French Academy in Rome between 1814 and 1819.
An intimate scene of life at the Villa Medici
Vinchon portrays himself seated at a table beside a window opening onto the villa and the Roman hills. The bed, folding screen, violin and simple furniture evoke the daily life of a young resident artist, far removed from the formality of an official portrait.
