About the Moscow Triumphal Gate

This historic view bears the inscriptions “F. Bureau”, “Moscou — Arc de Triomphe” and number 58. It was issued by Daziaro, a publisher of Russian views in the nineteenth century. Daziaro is the publisher here, not the monument’s artist.

A monument to the victory of 1812

Architect Osip Bove designed the gate, which was erected from 1829 to 1834 at Tverskaya Zastava, the entrance to Moscow. It commemorated the Russian victory in the war of 1812. Ivan Vitali and Ivan Timofeev produced its sculptural decoration, including Victory in a chariot drawn by six horses.

A view of the original structure

Cast-iron columns, warriors between them, reliefs and the crowning group define this frontal composition. The original gate was dismantled in 1936 and reconstructed in 1966–1968 on Kutuzovsky Prospekt, so this image preserves the monument’s appearance at its first site.
