This collection brings together reproductions of paintings by Tadeusz Makowski (1882–1932), a Polish painter, draughtsman and printmaker who settled in France from 1908–1909 onwards. Children, musicians, rural scenes, landscapes, portraits and still lifes trace the development of an oeuvre that passed through Cubism before arriving at a personal, geometric and often theatrical language.

From Kraków to Paris

Makowski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Józef Unierzyski, Jan Stanisławski and Józef Mehoffer. In Paris, from 1910 onwards, he frequented the Cubist milieu of Montparnasse. The National Museum in Warsaw describes the period 1911–1915 as one of the most coherent Cubist experiments in Polish art.

Geometry then appeared in landscapes, objects and the human figure. It does not, however, sum up his entire career: during the First World War, his stay in Brittany led him towards the observation of nature, folklore and rural life. Breton Landscape with a Seated Man and Farm at Keranquernat bear witness to this attention to the landscape.

Children, a central subject after 1918

From 1918 onwards, childhood became a major motif. Makowski did not paint merely sentimental scenes: the National Museum in Warsaw emphasises the models’ psychology, their social relationships and the way they imitated the adult world. Two Children on a Balcony, Little Pupils and Children on a Road reveal the variety of these situations.

In the late works, the silhouettes become more synthetic: round or angular heads, bodies constructed from volumes, suspended gestures and mask-like faces. This stylisation may seem naïve at first glance, but it results from a gradual formal investigation and often carries a melancholic or grotesque dimension.

Musicians, professions and geometric figures

Towards the end of the 1920s, Makowski developed musical compositions and scenes in which the figures resemble puppets. Light cuts across the forms and creates a theatrical atmosphere. His paintings of musicians, railway workers, fishermen and artisans also observe social roles and the adult world.

Seated Fisherman with a Pipe focuses on an isolated figure, while Train introduces a more mechanical imaginary. To create a cohesive group, these subjects can be brought together through their dark palette, contours or volumetric construction.

Landscapes of France and rural scenes

Makowski regularly spent the summer in the French countryside. Villages, farms, bridges, mills and fieldwork occupy an important part of the catalogue. Landscape with Windmill and Bridge combines architecture and nature, while Village of Merey places greater emphasis on the structure of the built environment.

These landscapes reveal the painter’s development: some remain close to observation from nature, while others simplify houses, trees and paths into an almost geometric arrangement.

Flowers, objects and portraits

The catalogue also includes bouquets, fruit, studio objects and portraits. Iris in a White Vase and Still Life with pipes offer two very different approaches to still life. Self-Portrait Study opens onto the image the artist constructs of himself.

Choosing a Tadeusz Makowski reproduction

A child’s portrait or an isolated figure suits a vertical format. Landscapes, groups and rural scenes are better suited to a horizontal presentation. A cohesive series can be built around a shared subject — childhood, village life, music or flowers — or a common palette.
