This collection brings together reproductions of Albert Marquet (1875–1947), the French painter associated with the early Fauvist movement. Paris, the Seine, the ports of France and Europe, Algiers and the Mediterranean form the core of a catalogue in which water, quays, boats and changing light recur time and again.

Albert Marquet, from Bordeaux to Paris

Born in Bordeaux in 1875, Marquet studied in Paris at the École des Arts Décoratifs and then in Gustave Moreau’s studio. He became friends with Henri Matisse and associated with Henri Manguin, Georges Rouault and Charles Camoin. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1901 and at the Salon d’Automne from 1904.

Around 1900, his landscapes painted with Matisse heralded Fauvism. Marquet later moved away from systematically vivid colour, returning to a light more closely grounded in observation, with a frequently restrained palette and strong contours.

Paris, the Seine and its bridges

Paris remained his anchor. From his windows and studios, Marquet observed the Seine, its bridges, quays and the movement of traffic. The Quai des Grands-Augustins combines urban landscape, river and perspective.

Pont Neuf in the Snow highlights the importance of the seasons. Autumn mist, winter sunshine, twilight and grey weather transform the same space without altering its essential structure.

Ports, boats and maritime life

The port became one of his preferred subjects because it brings together light, water, quays and human activity. The Port of Marseille presents a Mediterranean scene animated by boats. Port of Saint-Tropez belongs to the period of his early Fauvist landscapes.

Ocean liners, cargo ships, sails, breakwaters and transporter bridges make it possible to create a series centred on maritime forms. Horizons and reflections are particularly well suited to landscape formats.

Normandy and the Atlantic coast

Fécamp, Rouen, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Audierne, La Rochelle and Les Sables-d’Olonne mark his journeys along the French coast. Fécamp Beach, painted during a stay in Normandy with Raoul Dufy, belongs to the Fauvist landscapes presented at the 1906 Salon d’Automne.

The Rouen Transporter Bridge brings together industrial architecture and a river landscape. The ports of Boulogne and La Chaume extend this theme through different kinds of light.

Algiers, La Goulette and North Africa

Marquet regularly stayed in Algeria, where he met Marcelle Martinet, whom he married in 1923. Windows, terraces and elevated viewpoints gave him views over the bay, the city and the port. Open Window onto the Bay of Algiers frames the landscape from indoors.

Algiers, View of the City and Port broadens the perspective. Pink mist, grey weather, the Port of Agha, the Oudaya Casbah in Rabat and Bou-Regreg bear witness to several journeys and a constant attentiveness to atmospheric effects.

The Mediterranean and Europe’s port cities

Collioure, Agay, L’Estaque, Naples, Venice, Toulon and Porquerolles complete the Mediterranean geography. Venice, the Yellow Sail uses an accent of colour amid a composition dominated by water.

Stockholm, Molde, Ouchy and Lake Geneva show that his interest in ports and large bodies of water extended beyond the Mediterranean. A gallery organised by city makes it possible to compare the architecture; a colour-organised gallery further highlights variations in sky and water.

Views from a Window

Marquet often adopts an elevated viewpoint. The window or balcony simplifies the city into broad areas: foreground, quay, water and horizon. This framing creates depth while maintaining a clear composition.

Views of Paris, Algiers and La Goulette lend themselves well to a series. Despite the geographical distance, the downward gaze and presence of water create visual continuity.

Nudes, Portraits and Interior Scenes

Landscape dominates the collection, but Marquet also created nudes and a few portraits. The Blonde Woman belongs to a limited body of work in which the form is strongly outlined and the palette is organised around flesh tones and ochres.

Self-Portrait, Portrait of André Rouveyre, The Two Friends and studio scenes offer a different rhythm. They can accompany a landscape or form a more intimate ensemble.

Flowers, Gardens and Verdant Landscapes

Bouquets, peonies, daisies, gardens and parks complement the ports and rivers. Flowers placed in front of a window sometimes maintain a connection with the exterior landscape.

These works suit botanical décor or a smaller room. The orientation and density of the composition should guide your choice of format.

Choosing an Albert Marquet Reproduction

Ports, bays and rivers often favour a horizontal format. Downward views, windows and figures may be vertical. Before choosing, check the image orientation and the dimensions offered on the product page.

For the poster option, the print is produced on 140 g paper with HD rendering at 150 DPI. Dimensions, canvas and framing options vary according to the artwork, format and intended setting. The product page displays the variants actually available.
